SURAT: Power, a two-year-old doberman with a nose for justice, has become the unlikely hero in a gang-rape investigation near Surat’s Mota Borsara village. On Wednesday morning, Power’s sharp instincts led the police to a major breakthrough. With unwavering precision, the female dog sprinted from the crime scene and stopped near a motorcycle about 800 feet away, before circling back to the spot, confirming a lead that the cops were working on.
The police, already investigating multiple leads, homed in on the motorcycle Power had identified. It was soon discovered that the motorcycle had changed ownership four times and was currently owned by a resident of Kamrej named Tanvir. The accused, Ramsajivan alias Raju Vishwakarma, had borrowed it from Tanvir. With no CCTV footage and the suspects having turned off their phones, Power’s remarkable tracking abilities proved to be the key in connecting the dots.
“The dog’s precision confirmed our suspicion about the motorcycle’s connection to the crime. Power played a crucial role in solving the case. While our teams were working on several leads, this was the sure-shot breakthrough we needed,” said Hitesh Joysar, superintendent of police, Surat.
The motorcycle had been left near a cremation ground, and Power’s sharp senses quickly linked it to the crime. According to Harji Panchiya, assistant sub-inspector and Power’s handler, the accused, fearing capture, had abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot. But Power’s tracking skills proved flawless. “After sniffing around the crime scene, it made a beeline to the vehicle, connecting it to the gang rape and leading the investigation in the right direction,” said Panchiya.
Panchiya received Power when she was two months old. She started her training when she was six months at the State Police Dog Training Centre in Ahmedabad under the supervision of retired armed forces officer Chandan Singh Rathore. Now, five months into her service, she’s already demonstrating the results of over a year of rigorous training. “All tracker dogs undergo 12 months of intensive training. They are trained for specific purposes,” said D G Zala, inspector at the Dog Training Centre.
Thanks to Power’s intervention, the police arrested Vishwakarma, Shivshankar Chaurasiya and Munna Paswan for their alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl near Mota Borsara on the night of Oct 8. Chaurasiya died in police custody, and the remaining accused are in custody until Oct 17.
