The incident, which occurred Tuesday afternoon in the rural eastern part of the state, led to a prison lockdown, according to the Associated Press.
Prison and state officials have disclosed few details since the incident, but White Pine County Sheriff Scott Henriod confirmed on Friday that all three deceased inmates died from stab wounds or “multiple sharp force injuries.”
Sheriff Henriod stated in an email to The Associated Press that the investigation is ongoing.
Earlier identified victims include Connor Brown, 22, from South Lake Tahoe, California, and Zacharia Luz, 42, from Las Vegas. Luz was known as a street-level leader of the Aryan Warriors white supremacist prison gang.
Both Luz and another inmate were among 23 alleged gang members indicted in a broad racketeering case in Las Vegas in 2019, which involved charges of murder, drug trafficking, and identity theft. This indictment also linked them to the 2016 stabbing death of Andrew Ryan Thurgood at High Desert State Prison in southern Nevada.
The indictment linked Williams and another individual to the 2016 stabbing death of Andrew Ryan Thurgood in a cell at High Desert State Prison in southern Nevada.
Williams pleaded guilty to open murder in Las Vegas in 2021, resulting in a plea deal that spared him from the death penalty. He was also convicted as a habitual offender and sentenced to life without parole at Ely State Prison, located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of the Utah border, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.
Luz was sentenced last year to seven to 18 years in prison following his conviction on felony racketeering and forgery charges. Brown, who was serving a seven- to 20-year sentence for robbery with a deadly weapon, was sentenced in 2021 after pleading guilty to stabbing a gas station clerk and a casino patron in downtown Reno in 2020.
Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the recent violence at the prison. Sheriff Henriod noted that deputies were called to the scene around 9:40am on Tuesday. No corrections officers were reported injured, according to prison officials.
