RUDRAPUR: The brutal rape and murder of a 33-year-old nurse in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, has ignited widespread outrage in Uttarakhand‘s Udham Singh Nagar district. On Friday, members of the Women’s Congress staged a protest at the office of the Senior superintendent of police (SSP), demanding the death penalty for the accused.
The protesters submitted a memorandum to SP City Manoj Katyal, calling for justice.Katyal said the investigation is being conducted thoroughly and that the perpetrator would face severe punishment. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased also demanded capital punishment for the accused.
The nurse’s sister was alarmed by the former’s sudden disappearance on July 30 after her shift. A missing person’s report was registered at the Rudrapur city police station.
Police launched a search operation, placing her mobile phone under surveillance and scanning more than 500 CCTV cameras. On Aug 1, the victim’s body was found in the bushes of an abandoned area in the nearby village of Dibdiba, just across the border in Uttar Pradesh.
The police identified a 28-year-old from Tursa Patti village in Bareilly, as the prime suspect. After an extensive manhunt in UP, Haryana, and Rajasthan, the accused was arrested in Jodhpur West, Rajasthan.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime, admitting that he had abducted the woman on the evening of July 30. He admitted to raping and strangling her before fleeing with Rs 3,000 in cash and her mobile phone.
The victim’s sister said, “My sister was already divorced and was struggling to raise her 11-year-old daughter. Her daughter has gone into depression since her mother’s murder. The culprit must receive the death penalty so that no one dares to commit such a heinous act again.”
At the protest, Congress state general secretary Meena Sharma demanded that the case be tried in a fast-track court, saying that “the culprit should be hanged. There is no place for such barbaric individuals in a civilised society.”
