PUNE: A 21-year-old food delivery person returning home after the day’s last delivery of food parcel, was run over by a speeding Audi car in a hit-and-run accident on the ACB Farm Chowk to Tadigutta Chowk Road at Koregaon Park in Pune around 1.30am on Friday.
Before hitting the victim’s scooter from behind, the car also hit another two-wheeler that resulted in the fall of three persons riding on it and minor injuries to them, police said.
Based on CCTV footage and other details, the police later detained the Audi car driver from his residence at Magarpatta in Hadapsar. The Mundhwa police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other charges against the driver and will produce him before a city court later in the day.
A senior police officer identified the victim as Rauf Akbar Shaikh, a resident of Shinde Vasti in Hadapsar. The car driver has been identified as Ayush Pradeep Tayal, who manages a relative’s company in the Ranjangaon industrial estate.
The officer said the car and the two-wheelers were proceeding in the same direction from ABC Farm Chowk to Tadigutta Chowk when it first hit a scooter in an attempt to overtake it. Three men riding on the scooter fell on the road. The car driver stepped up on the accelerator instead of waiting at the spot and ended up hitting Shaikh’s scooter barely a few meters ahead, the officer said.
Shaikh fell in front of the car due to a sudden jerk and was run over by the four-wheeler, the officer said. The car driver still did not stop and kept driving ahead, he added.
Senior inspector Neelkanth Jagtap and his team from the Mundhwa police reached the site on being alerted about the accident. Shaikh was taken to a private hospital in Hadapsar where the doctors pronounced him dead.
Later, the police identified the car’s registration number from CCTV footage of the accident and checked its owner’s details with the RTO. They secured the owner’s address and cell phone number from these details and picked up Tayal from his residence later in the morning. “We have collected his blood sample and the same has been sent to the Sassoon hospital for blood alcohol test. A report is awaited,” the officer said.
A case relating to offences under sections 105 (culpable homicide), 281 (rash driving), 125 (a), which refers to act endangering life or personal safety of others, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 184 (driving dangerously) and other relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act has been registered in this connection.
The accident brings back the memories of the horrific Porsche Taycan car crash on May 19 in Kalyaninagar in which two young software engineers were killed after the high-end car driven by the 17-year-old son of a prominent Pune builder hit their bike. The teenager was returning to his Wadgaonsheri home after visiting a couple of pubs with friends in the Mundhwa area to celebrate the completion of their Std XII board exam.
