The previous high of 100 degrees, recorded in 1948, was surpassed when the NWS measured a temperature of 101 degrees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport at 2:54 pm on August 29.
In addition to the extreme heat, storms are possible later on Friday evening, with development anticipated between 9 pm and midnight.Although not everyone in central North Carolina will encounter storms, those that do may be severe, potentially bringing damaging straight-line winds, according to media reports.
High temperatures are expected to fall back to the low 90s starting Friday, with a low risk for isolated storms through the weekend. Next week, temperatures are expected to drop into the 70s, with lows possibly reaching the 50s.
