Ramita Jindal qualifies for women’s 10m air rifle final at Paris Olympics | Paris Olympics 2024 News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India’s Ramita Jindal showcased her exceptional skills in the women’s 10m air rifle event, securing a spot in the final by finishing fifth in the qualification round at the Olympic Games on Sunday. Despite being a strong contender, Elavenil Valarivan succumbed to pressure and missed out on the final, finishing in 10th place.
Ramita, who had previously won a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, scored a total of 631.5 points, becoming the second Indian shooter after pistol specialist Manu Bhaker to qualify for the final.Elavenil, on the other hand, scored 630.7 points.
Although Ramita had a slow start and was not among the top eight until the sixth and final series, she made a remarkable comeback to secure her place in the final. Elavenil, a former junior world champion who had finished 16th at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, maintained her position in fifth place for most of the qualification round. However, a disappointing last series of 103.8 caused her to drop from fifth to 10th place, missing out on the eight-shooter final.
During the Olympic Selection Trials in New Delhi and Bhopal, Ramita had scored 636.4 points, surpassing the world record by 0.1 points. In the qualification round, she had an inconsistent performance, starting with a below-par 104.6 in the opening series before improving to 106.1 in the next round. She followed this with another average score of 104.9 and then shot two consecutive 105.3 and a 105.7, which ultimately earned her a spot in the final.
South Korea’s Ban Hyojin set a new Qualification Olympic Record (QOR) with an impressive score of 634.5, surpassing the previous record of 632.9 set by Norway’s Jeanette Hegg at the Tokyo Games.
Elavenil, who had faced challenges after the Tokyo Games and was unable to make the squad for the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, consistently maintained an average score of 10.5 throughout the qualification round. She shot excellent series of 105.8, 106.1, 104.4, 105.3, and 105.3, but a significantly poor final series of 103.8 led to her elimination from the competition
