Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday vowed to bring more destruction to Ukraine, saying Kyiv “will regret what they are trying to do in our country”.
Putin’s statement comes a day after eight Ukrainian drones struck six residential high-rise buildings in Kazan, located about 800 kilometres east of Moscow.
Russia accused Ukraine of a “massive” drone attack that hit a luxury apartment block in the city, some 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) from the frontier.
“Whoever, and however much they try to destroy, they will face many times more destruction themselves and will regret what they are trying to do in our country,” Putin said during a televised government meeting on Sunday, reported news agency AFP.
During a ceremony, Putin spoke to Tatarstan‘s regional leader about the incident in Kazan.
The aerial assault on Kazan marked another instance in the intensifying air campaigns during the conflict spanning almost three years. However, Ukrainian authorities have remained silent regarding the incident.
Previously, Putin had issued warnings about deploying hypersonic ballistic missiles against central Kyiv in retaliation to Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil.
Never abandoned desire to normalise ties with US: Putin
Putin said that Russia was ready to normalise relations with the United States and other Western countries provided that such efforts do not compromise Russian interests.
In an interview with Russian TV and radio outlet VGTRK, Putin said, “It is possible to do everything if there is desire. We have never abandoned this desire.”
The Russian President was responding to a question about the possibility for Russia and the United States to normalise their relations.
Everything changes in international relations and only interests remain invariable, in this case, “the interests of Russia and its people,” the Russian leader stated.
“If we see that the situation changes in a way that there are opportunities and prospects for building relations with other countries, then we are ready for that. It is not a question of us but it’s a question of them. But this should be without detriment to the interests of the Russian Federation,” Putin emphasised.
