Patrick Orren Stephenson, charged with the murder of Samantha Murphy, will remain in custody for another three months before his case is heard again due to the “unprecedented” amount of evidence presented against him, a court has announced.
“The brief is extensive and involves a significant amount of CCTV footage,” prosecutor Daniel White said, reported 9news.com.
However, Stephenson’s lawyer, Moya O’Brien, opposed the three-month extension, was quoted as saying, “It’s a case that needs to be moved quickly.”
The 22-year-old is accused of killing 51-year-old Murphy, a mother of three, who was reported missing on February 4 in Mount Clear.
Stephenson is also facing charges related to a crash on October 1 of the previous year. He has been accused of careless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in a single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in Ballarat.
