The 22-year-old is accused of killing 51-year-old Murphy, a mother of three, who was reported missing on February 4 in Mount Clear.
Stephenson is also facing charges related to a crash on October 1 of the previous year. He has been accused of careless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in a single-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle in Ballarat. Details on these charges were not discussed in court, and the case has been adjourned until November 14.
Stephenson is the son of Orren Stephenson, a former AFL player. Despite thorough searches conducted by both police and the public, Murphy, who went jogging on February 4, has yet to be located.
