GHAZIABAD: A 58-year-old sub-inspector deployed for security on a route chief minister Yogi Adityanath was to take during his visit to the city on Friday died after a branch of a eucalyptus tree fell on him outside the collectorate.
Harishchandra Sharma, in charge of the police chowki at the collectorate, succumbed to injuries in hospital a day later on Saturday.He had joined UP Police as a constable in 1996.
Abhishek Srivastava, ACP (Kavi Nagar), said Sharma was standing with his colleagues under the shade of the tree when the branch broke and fell on him around 1.30pm.
“The branch fell directly on him. The other cops standing nearby suffered minor injuries. He was rushed to the emergency ward of a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on Saturday afternoon,” he added.
A senior officer said since Sharma died on duty, one of his family members will be offered a job in keeping with educational qualification and eligibility criteria.
“He was scheduled to retire in 2026. So, his family will be entitled to full remuneration as pension, which can be paid to his wife until the designated retirement date. Subsequently, the pension amount will be disbursed to his surviving spouse in keeping with rules and regulations,” he said.
In sheer coincidence, Sharma’s elder brother, too, had died under similar circumstances. On Aug 23, 2019, Harprasad Sharma was sitting under a tree at his farm in Bulandshahr when a branch fell on him. He, too, died during treatment.
