NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Friday hit out at “some members” of the higher judiciary, alleging them of compromising the independence and integrity of the courts.
In a debate on the Constitution at Lok Sabha, the TMC MP also lashed out at former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud over his “prayed to God” remark with regard to the Ayodhya temple verdict.
Mahua said farmers of the Constitution would never have imagined that judges would rely on private conversation with God to deliver judgement rather than reason and logic.
In October, Chandrachud shared his personal experience dealing with the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute and said that he prayed to God for a solution.
During a felicitation ceremony in his native village of Kanhersar, the ex-CJI revealed that he had sought divine intervention to find a resolution to the complex case that had been before him for three months.
“Very often we have cases (to adjudicate) but we don’t arrive at a solution. Something similar happened during the Ayodhya (Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute) which was in front of me for three months. I sat before the deity and told him he needs to find a solution,” ex-CJI said.
“Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way,” he asserted.
Soon after Mahua’s speech, the Upper House was adjourned for half an hour till 5 pm as the uproar erupted, with the ruling BJP objecting to her remarks and seeking the Speaker to expunge them.
