This response followed Shah’s statement that the decadal census would be conducted at an appropriate time and an announcement would be made once the details were finalised.
“The census will be carried out at an appropriate time. We will make an announcement for it when it is decided,” Union home minister said at a press conference in Raipur while replying to a question on it.
Congress general-secretary Jairam Ramesh commented, “The self-styled Chanakya has just dropped a bombshell. Yesterday, in Chhattisgarh, he let out a top secret. He said that the census will be carried out at an appropriate time and that an announcement will be made for it when it is decided.”
“Wow. Such clarity on a census that has already been delayed for over three years!” Ramesh expressed on X.
The house listing phase of the census and the exercise to update the National Population Register were initially scheduled from April 1 to September 30, 2020.
However, the Covid-19 outbreak led to their postponement. Since then, the census operation has remained on hold, with no new schedule announced by the government.
There have been calls from several opposition parties for a “caste census,” a politically significant issue that remains unaddressed by the government.
The delay in the census has been a point of contention, with opposition parties demanding clarity and action on this task.
