NEW DELHI: Team India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is on the verge of achieving a significant milestone in international cricket as he is just 39 runs away from equalling Virat Kohli‘s record to become the second-fastest batter in the world to score 2500 runs in T20 Internationals (T20Is).
Kohli, who retired from T20Is in June 2024 after India’s title-winning T20 World Cup campaign, accomplished the feat in 73 matches.
In comparison, Suryakumar has accumulated 2461 runs in 72 T20I games so far.
If he scores 39 runs in the second T20I against Bangladesh, he will match Kohli’s record in exactly the same number of games.
However, the overall record for the fastest to 2500 T20I runs is held by Pakistan’s former captain, Babar Azam, who reached the milestone in just 67 matches.
Fastest to 2500 runs in T20Is
- Babar Azam (Pakistan) – 67 matches
- Virat Kohli (India) – 73 matches
- Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) – 76 matches
- Aaron Finch (Australia) – 78 matches
Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 86 matches
Suryakumar Yadav has a chance to etch his name alongside these greats of the game, marking another significant milestone in his already impressive T20I career.
The first T20I against Bangladesh saw Suryakumar play a quick-fire knock of 29 runs off just 14 balls at a strike rate of 207.14.
India comfortably won the match by seven wickets, bowling out Bangladesh for a paltry 127 and chasing the target with 49 balls to spare.
Arshdeep Singh led the bowling attack with figures of 3/14, while Varun Chakravarthy and Mayank Yadav contributed crucial wickets.
With India taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, all eyes will be on Suryakumar in the second T20I on Wednesday.
If India secure another win, they will wrap up the series and extend their dominant run following a recent 2-0 Test series sweep against the same opposition.
