PUNE: A teacher (40) was arrested on Friday on charges of passing sexual remarks and harassing 19 girl students from Std V to X in a private school in Mulshi.
Pune rural police took the teacher in custody from his residence in Loni Kalbhor. He was produced before a court which ordered his custodial remand till Sept 8.
Inspector Santosh Girigosavi of Paud police told TOI that some of the affected students initially reported the teacher’s objectionable behaviour to their principal, who alerted the school management’s executive committee.
“On Sept 5, committee members visited the institution for an inquiry. Nineteen students recorded their statements, following which the police were informed,” the officer said. One of the committee members lodged a complaint. The police invoked charges under sections 74 (outraging modesty), 75 (making sexually coloured remarks) and 79 (uttering words or making gestures intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act against the teacher.
