Teen dies on waterlogged city street; two electrocuted | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Tragedy struck on Friday when a 15-year-old boy lost his life on a waterlogged road in central Delhi’s Chanakyapuri. The incident occurred following heavy rain in various parts of the city. The exact reason behind the death is unclear, as police said the boy had drowned while civic officials claimed that he was hit by a car.
The victim, identified as Sourabh, resided with his family at the nearby Vivekanand Camp. His father, Kallu, hailed from Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh and worked as a mason to support his family. Sourabh used to often bathe in waterlogged areas with friends after rain.
A senior police officer said that they received a PCR call around 12 pm on Friday about the incident, and a team of cops reached the spot to investigate the matter. Initial reports indicated that Sourabh and a group of his friends were enjoying rain on the waterlogged road. However, the situation took a grim turn when, at one point, Sourabh lost control, and the heavy current of the water swept him away. After being carried several metres, he became entangled with a car.
Due to the slope on Bapu Dham Road in Chanakyapuri, water often accumulates after rain. The slope also causes waterlogging outside an international school in the area. The road connects Sardar Patel Marg to Dhaula Kuan Road.
The officer further added that Sourabh’s friends, Pankaj and Amulya, who had been chasing him during the incident, managed to reach him. Realising the gravity of the situation, they immediately informed Sourabh’s family members, who rushed to the scene. Some people who helped get him out of the water even tried to save the teenager by giving CPR. The family members rushed him to the hospital. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival by doctors there.
An NDMC official, on the condition of anonymity, claimed the boy was hit by a car. “According to our information, it was not a case of drowning. The place where the incident happened was not submerged,” the official added.
