The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), just days after mandating cybercrime awareness messages as caller tunes, is making people aware about fake calls and how to combat the rising tide of fraudulent communications. It is now educating citizens about common types of fraud calls and provide clear instructions on how to report them.

In a separate post on X, the DoT said that fraudsters can also make fake calls by posing as employees from LIC, IRDAI, Income Tax Department or banks. In such cases, people should file a police complaint, call 1930 and report the incident on Sanchar Saathi portal.

Cybersecurity caller tune for 8-10 times a day for three months
Recently, the DoT ordered telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to play cybercrime awareness messages 8-10 times per day for the next three months. These pre-call announcements, provided by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), aim to educate people about common scams, such as the “digital arrest” scam where fraudsters impersonate authorities to extort money.
This initiative comes in response to the increasing sophistication of cybercrime in the country and the government is working with telcos to block international calls that are “spoofed” to appear as local numbers, a tactic often used in scams.
