Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared a post on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) mocking the crowning of Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark as 73rd Miss Universe 2024. In the post, Musk posted a photo sarcastically celebrating the winner being a biological woman following the pageant’s decision to allow transgender women to participate. The picture reads “Breaking: internet stunned after an attractive biological female human of healthy weight wins Miss Universe pageant”.
Why Elon Musk joked about the pageant
The 21-year-old Victoria Kjaer Theilvig is the first Danish woman to win the pageant. She won by defeating 120 other contestants. This year’s competition was ‘more traditional’ than 2023 that featured plus-size, married, and transgender women. Last year, a transgender woman from Portugal made it to the top 20, and months before the 2023 competition, 22-year-old Rikkie Valerie Kolle made history as the first transgender Miss Netherlands.
What may have sparked the wave of criticism is the fact that the pageant was acquired by Thai media mogul Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, a transgender woman and strong advocate for trans rights. Consequently, many fans expected another year of breaking from the competition’s traditional norms. Instead, a biological female was crowned the winner, leaving fans puzzled and criticizing the pageant.
