The union health minister charged that the state of West Bengal had spiraled into lawlessness and increasing “atrocities” against women, despite having chief minister of the same gender.
“I would also like to say that the way the West Bengal government has tried to hush up and suppress this case, I condemn it in the strongest terms,” the union minister said in a video.
BJP chief JP Nadda also referred to the ruling by the West Bengal High Court earlier and hailed the court’s decision to direct a CBI enquiry into the matter to bring justice.
“I welcome the decision of the high court for the CBI inquiry, I am confident that the CBI inquiry will bring out the truth,” he added.
The BJP chief assured that the Modi 3.0 government will do everything in its capacity to bring justice to the victim and action against the culprit.
“Many delegations of doctors’ association have met us in the last 2 days, I have assured everyone that the Central Government will take action against anyone connected with this incident,” he said.
On the back of nationwide outrage over the rape of the doctor in Kolkata, the heath minister held a meeting with a delegation of the Indian Medical Association earlier in the day. During the meeting, a memorandum demanding the declaration of hospitals across the country as safe zones, a central law against violence to bring in stipulations for recoginition of medical colleges.
In reposnse to the demand, the heath minister was reported to have assured the government will look into the first two demands while accepting the NMC stipulations on security.
“IMA pressed for better working conditions and accommodations for Resident doctors. The minister responded positively to this demand as well. IMA considers this message as the first step in the resolution of the issue,” the medical body said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court also asked the police to hand over all the documents related to the case to the central probe agency immediately.
The HC also urged the agitating doctors to call off ceasework saying that have a ‘pious obligation’ on the part of doctors to treat their patients.
The body of a post-graduate trainee, who was reportedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital, was found on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case on Saturday.
