A recent poll conducted by Clever has ranked Washington, DC as the least desirable city in the United States. The survey carried out in June with 1,000 respondents, highlighted high living costs and increasing crime rates as major factors contributing to the city’s low ranking.
According to the survey, about 33 per cent of participants listed Washington, DC among their top five least desirable cities.High living costs, which 65 per cent of respondents cited as a critical issue, and a rise in crime rates were identified as significant reasons for the city’s negative perception.
Washington, DC experienced 274 murders in 2023, marking the highest number in over 20 years. Some residents have criticized Mayor Muriel Bowser’s handling of the crime situation, claiming it has deteriorated their quality of life. Despite these issues, the city is recognized for being favourable to working parents due to its strong work and health infrastructure, including remote work options and a solid network of pediatricians.
The poll also indicated that other major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco were ranked as less desirable, primarily due to their expensive housing markets. For instance, Los Angeles was noted for requiring an annual income of $162,000 to afford a home.
In contrast, Tampa, Florida, emerged as the most desirable city for 2024. With its warm weather, low crime rates, and affordable housing, Tampa was chosen by 23 per cent of respondents as one of their top five desirable cities.
The survey’s broader findings reveal that while 73 per cent of Americans are content with their current living situation, there is notable dissatisfaction across various regions. 59 per cent of respondents reported unhappiness with their cities, and 43 per cent expressed embarrassment about their state.
States like California, which was previously considered the “Golden State,” have seen a decline in popularity. California recently ranked last in a Consumer Affairs poll due to poor scores in education, health, and safety. Similarly, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska also ranked low in terms of desirability.
