'Threatened to kill everyone': What led to encounter killing of Badlapur sex abuse accused Akshay Shinde

NEW DELHI: The encounter killing of Akshay Shinde (23), accused of sexually abusing two nursery school girls in Maharashtra‘s Badlapur, has sparked a nationwide row.
Akshay was shot dead by cops after he allegedly grabbed a constable’s gun and fired at a police officer while being taken from Taloja jail on Monday evening.
What exactly happened on Monday?
The central unit of Thane crime branch had taken his custody in an offence related to unnatural sex filed by his wife for probe.
Senior inspector Sanjay Shinde stated that the police team, including himself, API Nilesh More and two constables, took custody of the Akshay at 5.30pm.
Around 6.15pm, near the Mumbra bypass, when the accused was being transferred under a transit remand, his behavior became increasingly aggressive, according to police statements.
The former school janitor threatened to kill the cops when he was being taken from Taloja jail to the Thane crime branch office.
When assistant inspector Nilesh More alerted senior inspector Sanjay Shinde, he stopped near Mumbra and attempted to calm the situation by moving the accused to the rear seat of the police vehicle.
However, the Akshay suddenly erupted, shouting, “Why are you taking me back? What have I done? Let me go!” He then grabbed a gun and opened fire, resulting in his own death from retaliatory shots.
The accused reportedly seized PSI More’s service pistol and fired three shots, one hitting more in the thigh.
He then threatened to kill everyone in the vehicle and shot at Shinde and a constable. In response, Shinde fired a single shot from his service weapon.
Magisterial inquiry
A magisterial inquiry will investigate the claim that the accused fired at the police first. However, the Bombay high court has previously stated that officers cannot be ‘trigger happy’ emphasizing that deaths in custody must be treated seriously.
