ByteDance‘s TikTok is cutting hundreds of jobs globally, including a significant number in Malaysia, as the social media giant pivots towards increased use of artificial intelligence in content moderation, Reuters reported.
The layoffs, affecting over 500 employees in Malaysia alone, are part of a broader restructuring effort to improve TikTok’s global content moderation operations, according to a company spokesperson.The majority of affected staff were involved in content review processes.
Reuters sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, initially suggested that over 700 jobs were eliminated in Malaysia. Employees were notified of their dismissal via email late Wednesday.
TikTok confirmed the job cuts to Reuters, stating that “several hundred employees” worldwide would be impacted. The company emphasised its commitment to investing $2 billion globally in trust and safety measures this year.
“We’re making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further strengthen our global operating model for content moderation,” a TikTok spokesperson told Reuters. The platform aims to improve efficiency, with 80% of content violating guidelines now removed by automated technologies.
Earlier this year, Malaysia reported a sharp rise in harmful social media content and urged companies, including TikTok, to enhance monitoring on their platforms.
Sources told Reuters that additional cuts may take place next month as the company consolidates some regional operations.
