Timing of Iran attack on Israel could be this week: White House – Times of India

As war clouds hoover over Middle East, US President Joe Biden on Monday dialed up leaders in western capitals to discuss the ongoing tense situation in the region, including Iran‘s threat to attack Israel. The US president spoke to leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy, White House spokesperson John Kirby said.
The National spokesman said, “we have to be prepared for what could be a significant set of attacks,” adding that Washington shared Israeli assessments that any attack “could be this week.”
The spokesperson warned that the western capitals should be prepared for “significant attacks”.The White House also added that the timing of the attack could have an adverse impact on the Gaza ceasefire talks.
The US also said its incumbent on the European nations to “decide what role they would take in the event of an Iranian attack on Israel”.
The warning also came as the US deployed a guided missile submarine to the Middle East in the wake of reports that an attack from Iran against Israel was imminent.
Following a conversation with his Israeli counterpart, defense secretary Austin also ordered the Abraham Lincoln strike group to expedite its deployment to the region.
“Secretary Austin reiterated the United States’ commitment to defend Israel and emphasized the enhancement of US military force posture and capabilities throughout the Middle East due to escalating regional tensions,” the Pentagon statement on Sunday read. The US military plans to send extra fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East to strengthen Israeli defenses.
The recent escalation was triggered by the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Iran-backed Hamas, in Tehran on July 31. This attack has led to threats of retaliation from Iran against Israel, which is engaged in conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Iran has accused Israel of the killing, although Israel has not claimed responsibility. The situation was further exacerbated by the death of Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of Hezbollah, in an Israeli strike on Beirut.
However, Iran has accused the US of complicity in Haniyeh’s assassination due to its support for Israel. Amid these rising tensions, several US and coalition personnel were injured in a drone attack in Syria on Friday, marking the second significant attack on US forces in recent days..
