'Timing raises questions': BJP targets Congress over Adani indictment in US

NEW DELHI: After US charged Gautam Adani in alleged bribe and fraud scheme, BJP leader Amit Malviya on Thursday questioned the timing of report “just before the Parliament session and Donald Trump’s impending Presidency.”
The saffron party leader resorted to the “George Soros” rhetoric to lash out at Congress saying that all the states in question were ruled by the opposition when the alleged act took place.
“Since the power was costly, the SDCs were not willing to buy. Therefore, the Adanis (in collusion with Azure Power; a US firm) paid the equivalent of US $265 million to SDCs based in Odisha (BJD ruled), Tamilnadu (DMK), Chhattisgarh (Congress) and Andhra Pradesh (YSRCP) between Jul 21 and Feb 22 (by far the largest to AP),” he said in a post on X.

Malviya called out on the grand old party and its allies to “answer on the bribes it accepted” after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reiterated the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Probe into the transactions of Adani Group.
“The INC reiterates its demand for a JPC into the transactions of the Adani Group, which is leading to growing monopolisation in key sectors of the Indian economy, fueling inflation, and posing huge foreign policy challenges as well, especially in our neighbourhood,” Ramesh said.
US prosecutors have charged Gautam Adani his nephew Sagar, and other defendants for allegedly paying over $250 million in bribes between 2020 and 2024.
The bribes were reportedly made to government officials to secure favorable solar energy contracts, potentially yielding over $2 billion in profit. The charges also claim that this scheme was concealed from US banks and investors who helped fund the Adani Group’s project, raising billions of dollars in the process.
