Lucknow: Harassed by her husband for giving birth to a girl, a woman killed the 8-month-old infant in Gonda and tried to cover up the incident as animal attack.
However, investigation showed no signs of an animal attack. Later, on being quizzed, the accused Jagmati (in mid 30s) confessed to her crime following which she was arrested on Thursday.
Jagmati told police that she was being constantly harassed by her husband Motipher, who works in Mumbai, ever since their daughter was born 8 months ago.
According to police, on Sept 29, Jagmati had a heated argument with her husband over the phone.
“In one of the conversations that lasted for 40 minutes, Motipher repeatedly denies being father of the girl suggesting that the child might belong to someone else,” SP Gonda, Vineet Jaiswal said.
Enraged by the accusations, at around 11.30 pm, Jagmati threw the infant into the septic tank situated behind their house. At the time of incident, her 3-year-old son was asleep in the next room with his grandmother, and the child’s grandfather, Sitaram Gautam, was sleeping outside.
At approximately 12.30am, Jagmati informed her family that a wild animal had taken the baby.
Panic ensued, and the family immediately contacted the police. Officers from Parsapur police station, along with officials from the forest department began investigation.
“A search operation was conducted with the help of a dog squad and forensic teams, but no signs of a wild animal attack were found. Moreover, the child’s body was not recovered, raising suspicion,” said Jaiswal.
Jaiswal added when the mother was quizzed repeatedly, she broke down and confessed to her crime. She led the police to the septic tank from where the body was recovered about 40 hours later.
He said postmortem confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.
The SP said Jagmati has been arrested based on the complaint filed by the infant’s grandfather.
