Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would meet with premiers to discuss the Canada-US relationship in the light of President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threat. Trudeau said he had a good call with Trump last night where the two talked about some of the challenged. “It was a good call. This is something that we can do — laying out the facts, and looking forward in constructive ways. This is a relationship that we know takes a certain amount of working on and that’s what we will do,” Trudeau said.
“One of the important things is that we will be all pulling together on this. The Team Canada approach is what works,” Trudeau said.
Donald Trump Monday said he would impost 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, the two border-sharing neighbors — unless they stop sending drugs and illegal migrants to the US.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”
According to reports, in the 10-minute phone call, Trudeau pointed out that the number of migrants who cross from Canada to the US is just a tiny fraction of what comes from Mexico.
Canada immigration minister Marc Miller said the yearly flow of migrants from Canada to the US is equivalent to a “significant weekend at the Mexico border”. “At the same time … it is serious and we have a job not to make our problems the Americans’ problems and they have a job not to make their problems ours,” he said.
