President-elect Donald Trump, in a bold statement on Monday, reignited his interest in Greenland, asserting that the United States must “own and control” the island for national security and global freedom. The comments came as Trump announced his pick for the next US ambassador to Denmark, PayPal co-founder Ken Howery, who Trump described as the perfect choice to represent American interests.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, reaffirming his desire to bring the island under US control.
This marked a dramatic revival of a proposal Trump first raised during his first presidential term. Back in 2019, Trump famously sought to purchase Greenland, citing its vast natural resources and strategic geopolitical location. At the time, Denmark’s leaders rejected the idea, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen calling it “absurd” and insisting that Greenland—though part of Denmark’s kingdom—was not for sale.
Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland comes shortly after his controversial demand for Panama to return control of the Panama Canal to the US, an assertion met with strong opposition from Panama’s president.
While the Greenland purchase plan ultimately fizzled out during Trump’s presidency and was abandoned under President Joe Biden, Trump’s comments signal that, if re-elected, he plans to pick up where he left off—this time with a sharper focus on national security and American influence.
His selection of Ken Howery as ambassador to Denmark aligns with these ambitions. “Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States,” Trump said, signaling a shift toward solidifying American ties in the region, where Greenland remains a key player.
