CHENNAI: Two men wearing helmets snatched a nine sovereign gold chain worth about 4.8 lakh from a 32-year-old school teacher after one of them held her daughter at knifepoint at Kelambakkam on Friday evening. A hunt is on for the suspects.
Police identified the robbed woman as Shakeela and said she lived in an apartment at Padur near Kelambakkam with her husband Prakash, a software engineer, their 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.
Shakeela, who teaches at a private school in Kelambakkam, every evening walked home with her children, who study in the same school. On Friday evening, they were following the same routine, with her daughter walking in front and her son beside her.
As they reached gate 2 of the school and stepped out, two men on a bike, their faces covered with helmets, slowed down near the girl. “One of them got down and held the girl at knifepoint,” said a police officer.
The other motorist ran towards Shakeela and demanded that she part with her valuables.
As she stood there stunned, the man snatched her gold chain and ran towards the parked bike. The other suspect also freed the girl and hopped on the bike and sped away.
Shakeela immediately informed her husband about the incident and approached police.
Based on Shakeela’s complaint, the Kelambakkam police registered a case and began a search for the suspects. Further investigations are on. “She did not notice the registration number of the bike. There are no CCTV cameras on the road. We are trying to get footage from the nearby shops to track the suspects,” said a police officer.
Residents said there was an urgent need to improve visible policing in the area. “Police vehicles should be deployed every one or two kilometers. There is a need to re-introduced the bike patrolling concept in the city and suburbs,” said Hemanth, who lives in the area.
