Musk has previously touted the idea of Tesla owners generating significant income by renting out their vehicles as autonomous taxis when not in use. However, Khosrowshahi believes that the average Tesla owner might be hesitant to allow strangers into their personal vehicles.
During a recent episode of “The Logan Bartlett Show”, Khosrowshahi expressed uncertainty about whether the average Tesla owner would be comfortable having their car driven by a complete stranger.
The Uber chief also questioned Tesla’s ability to meet the demands of a large-scale robotaxi service, particularly during peak hours. Uber, as a leading ride-sharing platform, has extensive experience in managing driver supply and demand.
“Probably the times at which you’re going to want your Tesla are probably going to be the same times that ridership is going to be at a peak,” said Khosrowshahi during the interview.
Despite expressing reservations about the viability of Tesla’s robotaxi concept, Khosrowshahi has indicated a willingness to cooperate with the electric vehicle manufacturer. Drawing a comparison to the fast-food industry, Khosrowshahi suggested that both companies could benefit from a collaborative approach, similar to how fast-food chains leverage delivery services to expand their reach.
He added that Tesla can develop its autonomous vehicle and then integrate it into Uber’s ride-hailing platform.
