SILCHAR: At least 10 unidentified corpses, believed to be casualties of the Manipur unrest, are currently stored in the Silchar Medical College and Hospital morgue, as confirmed by sources.
Following violent incidents in Manipur’s Jiribam district, which borders Assam’s Cachar district, 12 bodies were transported to SMCH. Ten of these were identified as suspected Kuki militants who had died in an engagement with the CRPF in the previous week. Family members have collected these remains.
Two bodies from the initial group remain unidentified at the SMCH facility. Six additional bodies, comprising three women and three children, thought to be Meitei residents from Jiribam, were discovered floating in the Barak River and brought to SMCH for post-mortem examination.
A Kuki individual’s body, discovered in Jiribam, arrived at SMCH on November 16. The deceased, who resided in Manipur’s Tamenglong district, had been missing for several days before his body was found and is now at the SMCH facility.
The morgue also houses the remains of a Meitei villager from Jiribam, bringing the total number of bodies at SMCH to 10. Sources said the hospital authorities are waiting for the claimants of the unidentified bodies.
