‘Unluckiest Dismissal’: Batsman’s Departure Reignites Memories of Andrew Symonds’ Classic Dismissal

Cricket is a game of uncertainties where anything and everything is possible until the last ball is not bowled and a bottom line is not formed. However, sometimes luck also plays a significant role, leaving a team or a player hard-done by the unprecedented run of things. Something similar of the sort took place during Yorkshire’s 2nd XI’s T20 clash against Somerset’s 2nd XI. In the match, a player endured a dismissal which could go down as arguably the most unluckiest dismissal of all time.

Is this the most unluckiest dismissal of all time?

In what could be described as a bizarre incident, Somerset 2nd XI’s Ned Leonard suffered an unlikely dismissal where the ball struck the non-striker and went up in the air only for the bowler to grab it safely. From over the wicket, Cliff delivered a full-length ball that struck Leonard as he attempted to create space. Leonard, cramped for room, managed only to hit the ball straight to Kasey Aldridge, positioned at the non-striker’s end. Despite Aldridge’s efforts to evade the ball, it hit his back and deflected back to Cliff, who caught it easily.

After Somerset scored 191 runs, Yorkshire 2nd XI were dismissed for just 125 runs, resulting in a 66-run loss.

Andrew Symonds Suffered The Same Wrath Back in 2005

Former Australian batter, Andrew Symonds, was inflicted with a similar kind of dismissal back in 2005. It was the VB series match between Australia and Sri Lanka. Having completed his half-century, Symonds was on a roll in the match. He was looking unstoppable but the pinch of luck favored Jehan Mubarak, who picked up a wicket out of nowhere. Symonds nailed Mubarak’s delivery, which went ferociously towards the non-striker Michael Clarke. Clarke could not duck or move away from the trajectory of the ball and hence it hit his ankle and looped up only for Tillakaratne Dilshan to grab it.
