US homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, while dismissing the concerns over unidentified drones observed over New Jersey, said, “We can’t just shoot them out of the sky.”
While speaking to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday, Mayorkas said the unidentified drones pose no malicious intent or security risk.
He emphasised, “We know of no threat or nefarious activity, and I want to repeat, Wolf, that if we learn of any cause for concern, we will be transparent in our communication.”
President-elect Donald Trump issued a call on Friday evening for authorities to take down these unidentified drones observed across New Jersey and nationwide. When questioned about Trump’s suggestion, Mayorkas reaffirmed the absence of any unusual activity or threat.
Mayorkas explained, “We can’t just shoot a drone out of the sky,” after underscoring that their authority is “very limited.”
He further elaborated, “We have gone to Congress repeatedly asking for more authority to counter drone activity, and we have also asked for more authority to give to the state and local officials under our supervision, because it correctly notes those authorities need to be expanded.”
These statements follow increased sightings across New Jersey, New York, and as reported by Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV, numerous observations of aerial objects in Delaware and Philadelphia counties.
The Pentagon issued a statement on Wednesday, rejecting claims that any foreign nation was responsible for the mysterious drones spotted near critical military installations in New Jersey.
