KOTTAYAM: Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin stressed the importance of creating “equality in society” while his Kerala counterpart, Pinarayi Vijayan, highlighted the value of “cooperation” as they came together for the inauguration of the renovated Thanthai Periyar memorial and Periyar library at Vaikom, in Kerala’s Kottayam on Thursday.
The memorial and library have been established in honour of Dravidar Kazhagam founder “Periyar” E V Ramasamy, who played a significant role in Vaikom Satyagraha, a struggle for equality, a century ago.
Vaikom Satyagraha inspired several social battles in the country and the celebration of its centenary is not just to honour its leaders but also to remind us about the responsibility of creating the equality in society that they dreamed of, Stalin said.
Vijayan said both Kerala and TN were supporting each other on common issues in a true example of cooperative federalism. “Cooperation should be extended among more states at this stage when there is continuous encroachment on states’ rights, including economic autonomy,” he said, adding, “If Periyar stood for self-respect of individuals, time demands states stand for their self-respect.”
