NEW DELHI: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has secured her place in the semifinals of the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling competition at the Tokyo Olympics. This marks her first-ever Olympic semifinal appearance, achieved through impressive victories against top-ranked opponents.
Phogat’s journey began with a stunning upset against reigning Olympic and four-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan.Despite trailing 0-2 due to penalty points, Phogat exhibited remarkable resilience, securing a takedown in the final seconds to clinch a 3-2 victory.

Continuing her momentum, Phogat faced former European champion and world championship bronze medalist Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals. In a tightly contested bout, Phogat displayed tactical prowess and controlled the pace, ultimately securing a 7-5 victory. Her strategic approach and ability to counter Livach’s attacks proved crucial in securing her semifinal berth.
