Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma exempted as Gill, Pant, Rahul, Jadeja set to play Duleep Trophy | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors on Wednesday announced the squads for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, set to commence on September 5 in Bengaluru.
The selection committee has struck a balance between experienced domestic performers and emerging talent while granting exemptions to senior players such as captain Rohit Sharma, top-order batsman Virat Kohli, lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah, and frontline spinner R Ashwin.
The tournament will showcase the skills of international stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.
T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, who played a Test against Australia earlier this year, has also been included in the squads. Apart from Yadav, the other players mentioned have secured their places in the Indian team.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, a member of India’s victorious T20 World Cup squad, will participate in the Duleep Trophy, marking his first red-ball cricket appearance since his serious car accident in 2022.
Another left-handed wicketkeeper, Ishan Kishan, who was removed from the BCCI’s central contracts list after prioritizing the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the Ranji Trophy last season, will also be making a comeback.
Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, both of whom played crucial roles in India’s home series victory against England, have been included in the squads. Additionally, wicketkeepers Aryan Juyal and Abhishek Porel have also been selected to represent their respective teams in the tournament.
The India players had a limited engagement, with only a single match on their schedule. Consequently, several key players, including Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah and Ashwin were given exemptions from participating in this solitary game. They had the choice to opt out as first reported by PTI on July 16.
Suryakumar Yadav has been assigned to Team C, captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad, which also features promising young fast bowlers Anshul Khamboj and Himanshu Chauhan, whose performances in the previous season have caught the attention of the selectors.
Team B will include Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Washington Sundar. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will lead Team A, which boasts players such as Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, Shivam Dube, and Riyan Parag.
Akash Sengupta, hailing from Goalpara, is the second cricketer from Assam to participate in the tournament, joining Riyan Parag. Sengupta will be a part of Team D, led by Shreyas lyer, with teammates including Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, and Arshdeep Singh.
Unfortunately, the promising fast bowler Mayank Yadav will be absent from the event due to a lower abdominal injury that he is currently recovering from. Additionally, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s participation is contingent upon his fitness.
India is scheduled to play two Test matches against Bangladesh, with the first match starting on September 19 in Chennai and the second on September 27 in Kanpur. “The athletes who will be selected to represent India for the home Test series against Bangladesh will be replaced in the Duleep Trophy,” stated BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a release.
Initially, the Duleep Trophy was set to commence with two first-round matches in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, from September 5. However, to minimize logistical challenges, one of these matches has been relocated to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
