'Want House to function': Rahul Gandhi meets LS speaker amid ruckus in Parliament

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanded that “derogatory” remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey against him be expunged from the records. This comes as the House continues to face disruptions, with BJP accusing Congress of links with George Soros, while the opposition alleges that the BJP is shielding the Adani Group.
“I held a meeting with the Speaker. I told him that derogatory comments against me should be expunged. The Speaker said that he would look into it. Our aim is for the House to function and for discussions to take place,” Rahul Gandh itold reporters outside Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi said that while he is unbothered by personal attacks, his primary demand is for the House to function and for a debate to be held on December 13. “No matter what they say about me, we want a debate on December 13. They don’t want a discussion on Adani. Ultimately, we will not let this go. They can continue making allegations, but the House must function,” he added.
On December 5, Dubey’s remarks during Zero Hour caused a major uproar in the Lok Sabha, leading to an adjournment. During his speech, Dubey alleged that the Congress and Gandhi, in collusion with the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) investigative media organisation and George Soros were trying to derail parliament and the Modi government.
Earlier in the day, Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, wrote a letter to Speaker Om Birla, demanding that the remarks be expunged to facilitate the smooth functioning of the House. The Congress also expressed its willingness to participate in legislative business for the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, after the Speaker’s decision.
Posting the letter on X, Congress General Secretary (In-charge of Communications), Jairam Ramesh, stated that Gogoi had reiterated the Congress’ commitment to ensuring Parliament functions. “But does the Modi government want both Houses to function?” he questioned.
In the letter, dated December 10, Gogoi wrote, “As highlighted in my previous letters to you on December 5, 2024, and December 6, 2024, we remain deeply concerned about the defamatory remarks made by Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey against Leader of opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi and Member of Parliament from Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the Zero Hour session on December 5, 2024.”
“I implore you to announce your decision to examine our complaint and remove all defamatory and unparliamentary remarks from the record,” Gogoi continued. “After your decision, the Congress Party is keen to participate in the legislative business listed for the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.”
Meanwhile, the BJP doubled down, claiming a “deep connection” between George Soros and the Nehru-Gandhi family. “The connection between George Soros and the Nehru-Gandhi family runs deep, extending beyond Sonia Gandhi’s role as co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders – Asia Pacific (FDL-AP).”
“For instance, Fori Nehru, a Hungarian like Soros, was married to BK Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru’s cousin, making her the aunt of Rahul Gandhi, former Congress President and Leader of the opposition . Soros is documented to have visited Fori Nehru and maintained extended correspondence with her. Their association traces back to when BK Nehru served as India’s ambassador to the United States,” the BJP claimed on its social media handle on Wednesday.
