NEW DELHI: A Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) low-floor bus with around 50 passengers onboard caught fire and was completely gutted in east Delhi‘s Jagatpuri area on Thursday morning.
Fortunately, no passengers were injured as all were rescued soon after the fire broke out, officials reported.
The incident occurred at around 9:42 am, prompting a response from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS).
Station Officer Anoop Singh stated that a call was received and three fire tenders were dispatched to extinguish the flames.
“The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit in the vehicle’s air conditioning system,” Singh said.
The incident unfolded while the bus was en route to Seemapuri. An eyewitness, Surender Bhola, recounted how a biker noticed smoke emerging from the bus engine and alerted the driver, leading to a swift evacuation of the passengers.
“According to the eyewitness, there were around 50 passengers in the bus and all were rescued,” officials confirmed.
The fire incident led to significant traffic congestion at the Jagatpuri traffic light, impacting other travelers. Traffic police managed to regulate and restore the traffic flow eventually.
The quick response by the bus driver and the immediate action taken by the authorities ensured that a potentially disastrous situation resulted in no casualties. The DFS continues to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
