India ended their ICC trophy drought in the T20 World Cup, winning their second title after defeating South Africa by seven runs in an exciting final held in Barbados on June 29.The victory was secured by an impressive display of death bowling by the trio of Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya, as well as amazing knocks by Virat Kohli and Axar Patel, as per ANI.
Hardik Pandya, who has a reputation for giving game-winning, and breakthrough performances, was handed the task of defending 16 runs against David Miller in the last over of SA’s innings during a run-chase of 177 runs. When Miller attempted a powerful shot, the ball reached Suryakumar close to the boundary. To make the catch lawfully, he first moved outside the boundary and then inside it.
Commentator Ian Smith praised the player for his incredible athleticism on the catch, which shifted the balance of power to India, who won the match by seven runs. India last won an ICC trophy in 2013, the ICC Champions Trophy, hence this victory put an end to their 11-year trophy drought.
In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on X, Suryakumar said, “This will stay with me forever because I have done those things in my practice sessions a lot. But I did not think that it would come at that moment, World Cup Final and that situation. I am very grateful for that, to be doing something special on a special occasion. But yeah, as you said, that will remain with me forever. I think it will be for a lifetime.”
With 199 runs at an average of 28.42 and a strike rate of more than 135 in eight games, Suryakumar finished the T20 World Cup as the ninth-highest run scorer. With a best score of 53, he scored two half-centuries.
Virat Kohli (76), Hardik Pandya (3/20), and Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) were the main players in Men in Blue’s seven-run victory over South Africa in the Barbados final on June 29, ending India’s eleven-year ICC trophy drought.
With the help of Virat’s brilliant knock, India reached 176/7 in 20 overs, while Proteas was restricted to 169/8 in 20 overs by Bumrah and Pandya’s pace-choking attack, which allowed India to rescue the match from a losing situation.
