THIRUVANTHAPURAM: In a major security lapse, five escort vehicles and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan‘s official vehicle, were involved in a pile-up at Vamanapuram Park Junction on Monday at 6.30pm.
The convoy, which also included an ambulance, was travelling on MC Road when the lead escort vehicle suddenly braked to avoid hitting a two-wheeler.
According to initial reports, the escort vehicle braked abruptly to avoid hitting a woman on a scooter who was attempting a sudden right turn from the middle of the road toward Attingal. This resulted in the CM’s official car being hit from behind by an escort vehicle. Fortunately, due to heavy traffic, the vehicles were moving slowly and no injuries were reported. Following the collision, security personnel assessed the situation briefly and then continued on their route to Thiruvananthapuram.
The police have launched an investigation to locate the woman and a case has been registered, focusing on the possible traffic violations that led to the collision. This incident recalls a similar event in 2021 when three escort vehicles in the CM’s convoy collided in Kannur. No serious injuries were reported. tnn
