Backpack company Peak Design has issued a clarification on customer privacy after it was slammed by Luigi Mangione fans for snitching against the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO. “Peak Design has not provided customer information to the police and would only do so under the order of a subpoena,” the company said in a statement.
“We cannot associate a product serial number with a customer unless that customer has voluntarily registered their product on our site,” it said stressing customer privacy.
But what prompted this statement by CEO Peter Dering? After the chilling murder in New York City when the killer of Brian Thompson was on the run and untraceable, many people pointed out that the killer was carrying a Peak Design bag — as easily identifiable from the surveillance footage. CEO Peter Dering confirmed and said he contacted the police immediately after he saw the footage and assured any kind of help to track the culprit.
But this enraged a section of people who have been lionizing the killer. Peter Dering was called a snitch and many people, in fact, called for his death. “Y’all effed with the wrong people. Enjoy what is left of your company,” one said. “Peter Dering, CEO of Peak Design and the person who really called in the tip to arrest Luigi. All CEOs are the same and deserve the same fate as Brian Thompson,” another said.
One TikTok user suggested Peak Design bag owners remove the serial tags on their bags. Police sometimes track serial numbers of items to lead them to the person who purchased it. “What if somebody gave this to me as a gift and now I’m going to jail because they committed a crime, because you wanted to tell somebody that was my backpack? That is very scary,” one TikTok user posted.
