In today’s busy life, it is difficult to connect with family and loved ones. However, the digital era has made everything easier and more convenient. Sisters send rakhis to their brothers by courier or online services, even if they are miles away. In return, brothers send gifts online as a way to shower love and care on their sisters. On the day of Rakhi, brothers and sisters who live miles apart from each other also connect over video calls, celebrating and greeting each other online. Those who live nearby, make it a point to visit their brothers or sisters on this festival. Raksha Bandhan is a time when brothers and sisters unite for family get-togethers and express their gratitude to each other. It is also a time to spend quality time with each other, cherish old memories, and make new ones.

The perfect time to tie rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is during Aparahna, which is late afternoon. If Aparahna time is not accessible, then Pradosh time is more suitable for performing Raksha Bandhan rituals. Avoid practising Raksha Bandhan rituals during Bhadra; it occurs during the first half of Purnima Tithi. However, in North India, it is preferred to tie rakhi in the morning. According to Drik Panchang, Bhadra time is not suitable for an auspicious occasion; it is advised to always avoid practices during Bhadra time.
Raksha Bandhan rituals
– Pooja Thali: Decorate your pooja thali with flowers, sweets, an oil lamp (diya), vermilion powder (roli), sandalwood powder, rice grains, and rakhi.
– Aarti: Start the festival with an aarti, where the sister moves the lamp in a circular motion around her brother.
– Tika: Apply tika and chandan on your brother’s forehead along with a few grains of rice, and shower the grains on his head. Showering your brother with rice grains is considered a symbol of auspiciousness in Hinduism.
– Rakhi Ceremony: Gently tie the rakhi around your brother’s wrist, followed by saying wishes and blessings for his well-being.
– Exchange of Gifts: Now it’s your brother’s turn to shower you with gifts, expressing his love and affection.
The story behind Raksha Bandhan
Once, Lord Krishna cut his finger, and Draupadi tore a piece from her saree and tied it to his finger to stop the bleeding. This piece became a sacred thread, symbolizing the bond of Raksha Bandhan— a pure bond of love and care between sister and brother.
Significance of Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan signifies the pure and emotional relationship between brothers and sisters. Rakhi symbolises the love sisters have for their brothers and vice versa. This festival brings brothers and sisters closer together, no matter how far apart they are. People today continue to follow this tradition, even from miles away, through video calls. Sisters send rakhis by courier, and brothers give money or gifts as tokens of appreciation and love. Raksha Bandhan brings out the most honest and loving emotions in us.
