Why Ferrari Backed Out Of The Fight To Sign Adrian Newey

Legendary Formula One car designer Adrian Newey recently announced that he will be leaving Red Bull racing after spending two seasons with the team. As he was announced as a free agent it was seen that Ferrari would be the front runner to get the signature of the Briton but that has not been the case as now it is almost confirmed that Adrian Newey will be joining Aston Martin and the official announcement can be expected any day now. The deal with Aston Martin is said to be around $100 Million for three seasons.

The reason why Ferrari backed out of the race to sign Newey has now been revealed.

Vasseur Avoids Bidding War

Ferrari boss Fred Vassuer was given a substantial budget to try and get the signature of the legendary F1 designer but Vassuer did not want to get into a bidding war with Aston Martin according to a report by Autosport. As Ferrari was not willing to negotiate in such substantial terms and a move to McLaren had been ruled out, it paved the way for Aston Martin to get his signature.

Aston Martin has not been having a good season in 2024 as they are currently a mid-table team and they struggle to get themselves on a podium place, unlike last year. Even after the setback in 2024, Aston Martin is keen to become the top team in Formula One and Adrian Newey’s signature definitely helps in that.

Stroll’s Relationship With Newey

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll recently opened up about his relationship with Adrian Newey.

“Adrian and I have been not only talking for months but actually for years,” Stroll told Bloomberg.

“Adrian is clearly the most talented and gifted figure in Formula 1, based on his track record and history, in addition to being a hell of a gentleman.

“So I’d be very excited for Adrian to join our team, as I think every other Formula 1 team on the grid would feel exactly the same.”
