Brij Bhushan, who was the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief when Phogat and Punia joined fellow Olympian Sakshi Malik and others in an agitation demanding his removal and prosecution for alleged sexual harassment, iterated that the protest was part of a Congress conspiracy.
Brij Bhushan accused Haryana Congress functionaries Deepender Singh Hooda and Bhupinder Singh Hooda of plotting to malign him. “What I said initially stands true, and now the entire country echoes the same sentiment,” he said in his native district of Gonda in UP. “There’s no need for me to elaborate. I prefer not to discuss it too much to avoid it becoming a major issue in Haryana. Currently, the entire country is waiting for me to comment on this situation,” he said. The ex-MP said if the BJP leadership deputed him for campaigning in Haryana, he was confident of receiving strong support there. “During the Lok Sabha elections, people from Haryana encouraged me to contest from their region, promising their support. But I declined the offer.”
Brij Bhushan had been arrested under the now-repealed TADA in 1996 and imprisoned in Tihar jail. During his absence, his wife was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kaiserganj. In the last election, BJP fielded his son Karan Bhushan Singh, who won by over 1.48 lakh votes against SP’s Bhagat Ram.
