BELAGAVI: A 40-year-old woman and her 29-year-old daughter were allegedly attacked and nearly stripped by a group of individuals outside their house here. Claiming police inaction, the victims complained: “Instead of taking action, police advised us to resolve the matter with the help of local elders.”
The incident that happened last Monday in Waddarawadi, Belagavi, came to light only on Saturday after a video of the assault went viral, prompting the authorities to register a case at Malmaruti police station.
The victims claimed the attack was orchestrated to force them out of their house, which the assailants intended to use for constructing a temple.
DCP: Women were attacked on suspicion of prostitution
The victims – a married woman, who had returned to her maternal home after allegedly being harassed by her husband at his Maharashtra residence, and her daughter – reported that neighbours Indravva Astekar, Hoovappa Astekar, and Manikanth Astekar forcibly entered their house, dragged them out, abused them, tore off their clothes, assaulted them physically, and accused them of indulging in prostitution.
Police registered a case against the accused on Friday, after the victims approached the Belagavi police commissioner, fearing for their lives.
Rohan Jagadish, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), who visited the victims’ house, said the accused have been taken into custody.
“The two women were attacked on suspicion of prostitution,” Jagadish said. “The victims have alleged that local police delayed registering a complaint. We will investigate and act if any lapses are found,” the DCP added.
The incident, occurring close to Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, where Karnataka’s winter assembly session is scheduled to begin next month, has left many in a state of shock.
