NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old woman is alleged to have been sexually assaulted and dumped on the road in southeast Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan. Early on Friday, around 3.20am, police were alerted after an Indian Navy officer noticed a woman walking on the road in bloodied clothes. A team from the local police station rushed to the site where they found the woman in a tattered kurti and a piece of cloth around her lower body. They took her to hospital, where she was found to be bleeding from her genital area.
A police officer said they suspect that the sexual assault was committed in some other area and the woman was dumped in Sarai Kale Khan. Police learned that the woman was a graduate from Odisha and had arrived in Delhi a year ago. The woman told the cops that she had also completed a nursing course.
The woman’s parents had filed a missing person report after she left her home in Odisha and later discovered that she was in Delhi. They came to Delhi two months ago and persuaded her to return home with them, but she refused. The parents then returned to their home state.
Police said the woman had lost her phone a month ago and was out of contact with her family ever since. “She is unable to tell us how the phone was lost or whether it was stolen,” a policeman said. She was living in south Delhi but had run out of money. As a result, she was sleeping on the streets. “In some CCTV footage, we saw her sleeping near an ATM booth for two days,” an officer said.
Another cop said that the woman, who is under medical treatment, was unable to provide clear details about her assaulters. Police have contacted her brother, a doctor, to gather more information. “We are reviewing the CCTV footage of the area to determine how the woman ended up there,” the officer added.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
