Won’t let ‘Miya’ Muslims take over Assam: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he won’t let ‘Miya’ Muslims “take over” the state. When accused by opposition parties of being partisan, Sarma said: “I will take sides. What can you do about it?”
The Assam chief minister, who was speaking in the assembly on adjournment motions brought by the opposition parties to discuss the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon, claimed that crime rate in the state had not increased if the population growth was taken into account.
“Why will people from Lower Assam go to Upper Assam? So that Miya Muslims can take over Assam? We won’t let it happen,” Himanta Sarma asserted replying to the motion. The chief minister had earlier said that in Lower and central Assam and Barak Valley districts indigenous people had become a numeric minority and were living in constant fear.
He had also alleged that after Lok Sabha elections, “a section of members of a particular community had become very active and had been encouraged to commit such crimes” and had warned to come down heavily on the perpetrators. “In the last two months, 22 such crimes against women have taken place and this is the 23rd such incident in the state,” Sarma had said.
A 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by three people in Assam’s Nagaon district while she was returning home from her tuition on her bicycle. The incident triggered massive protests following which the chief minister had promised stern action against the perpetrators.
Three persons came on a motorcycle and surrounded the girl, who was then allegedly raped by them and left in an injured and unconscious state on the roadside near a pond. The class 10 student was later rescued by locals, who informed the police. The main accused in the case died while purportedly trying to escape from police custody.
The chief minister had promised prompt and “drastic action” in the case and had asserted that his government had a policy of zero-tolerance in dealing with crimes against women.
“When an incident (like rape) happens in Assam, police take quick action. No compromise is made. When it comes to matters of crimes against women, we have a zero-tolerance policy,” Sarma had said.
