MUMBAI: A drunk driver, Worli businessman Sabyasachi Nishank (32), led police to a 30-minute chase in Andheri East and rammed his SUV into two security barricades and three cars before he was caught in the early hours of Thursday.
Police said Nishank drove for almost 4.9km with a broken barricade on his bonnet.
Even as police followed Nishank on bikes, the three motorists, whose cars were damaged by his speeding SUV, asked three bikers waiting at the nakabandi near Holy Family School to help them follow him. “Police, along with the three motorists on bikes, intercepted the SUV near Seepz bus stop. With Nishank refusing to step out, the motorists dragged him out of his vehicle after breaking the window. “A mob assaulted him before we could free him from their clutches,” traffic constable Jaywant More said in his complaint.
Nishank was arrested by Andheri police, who slapped charges under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 324 (mischief), and the Motor Vehicle Act section 185 (drunk driving). Medical examination at a hospital showed that Nishank’s blood alcohol content was 42.5/100. “The legal blood alcohol content limit is 30mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, which is less than what was found in the blood of the accused,” an officer said. On Thursday, Nishank was produced before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court, which sent him to police custody till Monday.
