NEW DELHI: Indian wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 18 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction 2025 that was held in Jeddah on Sunday.
Chahal, the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20Is, began his IPL journey with Mumbai Indians in 2011 but gained prominence while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2014 to 2021.
Playing for RCB, Chahal thrived under Virat Kohli‘s leadership, becoming the team’s leading wicket-taker. His ability to bowl in the powerplay and middle overs made him a vital asset. He was especially dangerous on the smaller grounds, like M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, often taking crucial wickets.
Chahal’s impressive performance earned him a spot in the Rajasthan Royals team in 2022, but he was not retained by the franchise ahead of the auction.
Chahal is the highest wicket-taker in IPL history, with 205 wickets from 160 matches, with an average of 22.45 and an economy rate of 7.84.
Chahal is the first Indian to take 350 T20 wickets, achieving this milestone in May 2024.
In April 2024, Chahal became the first bowler to take 200 IPL wickets
In a memorable performance, Chahal took a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders in April 2022. In that season, Chahal was instrumental in RR reaching the final. He won the Purple Cap in the same season for being the highest wicket-taker.
Chahal is a highly talented and experienced leg-spinner who continues to make significant contributions to his team in the IPL.
From being a benchwarmer at Mumbai Indians to becoming a premier spinner, Chahal is now an integral part of the league’s history.
