Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal‘s unusual job posting for a Chief of Staff position has attracted more than 10,000 applications within 24 hours, despite requiring candidates to pay ₹20 lakh and work without salary for the first year.
The applications, which close at 6 PM today, came from diverse financial backgrounds, according to Goyal’s update on social media. “A lot of them well thought through, mixed between those who have all the money, some of the money, those who say they don’t have the money, and those who really don’t have the money,” he wrote.
While some hailed Deepinder’s unconventional job posting, touting it as “altMBA,” many had their fair share of criticism, especially on the front of the Rs 20 lakh fee. Industrialist Harsh Goenka, who called it potentially exploitative. “Rs 20 lakh fee excludes talented but underprivileged candidates,” Goenka posted on X, adding that while the idea was innovative, it “raises ethical concerns.”
The role, based at Zomato’s Gurugram headquarters, promises a salary exceeding ₹50 lakh starting from the second year. The company has pledged to match the candidate’s ₹20 lakh “fee” with a ₹50 lakh donation to a charity of their choice, emphasising that cost-saving isn’t the motivation.
The position seeks candidates with “hunger” and “empathy” but specifically “not a lot of experience,” focusing on attracting learners rather than résumé builders.
