1Imagine working at a job you love with people you actually like for 14 years straight. Then, to keep the job going, everyone agrees to take a 25% pay cut. You’re all ready to do it again for another year. But the boss says "no thanks" and shuts the whole thing down anyway.
That’s exactly what happened to Tom Selleck and the cast of Blue Bloods.
IMPORTANT POINT
The Blue Bloods cast voluntarily took a 25% salary reduction for Season 14 to help CBS save money. They were willing to do it again for Season 15. Despite this — and the show being the #6 most-watched broadcast show in its 15th year — CBS cancelled it anyway.
Tom Selleck sat down with his old friend Ted Danson (yes, that Ted Danson from Cheers) on Danson’s podcast called "Where Everybody Knows Your Name." Here’s what he revealed:
"Maybe people don’t realize, but a lot of shows become miserable to work on. You get a lot of egos and ‘I’m not coming out of my dressing room until he’s coming out’… and it’s miserable. Blue Bloods was never that."
— Tom Selleck
| Actor | Character | Role in the Family |
|---|---|---|
| Tom Selleck | Frank Reagan | Police Commissioner / Family Patriarch |
| Donnie Wahlberg | Danny Reagan | Detective / Frank’s oldest son |
| Bridget Moynahan | Erin Reagan | Assistant DA / Frank’s daughter |
| Will Estes | Jamie Reagan | Police Officer / Frank’s youngest son |
| Len Cariou | Henry Reagan | Retired Commissioner / Frank’s dad |
The Reagan legacy continues in a new spinoff called Boston Blue.
"We’ve been talking about Mr. Selleck for a long time… the door’s open. We would love to have him and we will make sure the story is just right because Tom is so adamant about the story, as he should be."
Tom Selleck and the entire Blue Bloods cast loved their show, loved each other, and loved their jobs. They took a 25% pay cut to keep it going and offered to do it again. The show was still a top-10 hit in Year 15. But CBS cancelled it anyway.
Now, the family lives on in Boston Blue — starring Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green — with the open invitation for Tom Selleck to return as Frank Reagan whenever the story feels right.
Great question! TV networks look at more than just ratings — they consider production costs, ownership stakes, streaming rights, and long-term strategy. Even a hit show can get cancelled if the math doesn’t work for the network’s bottom line.
Yes! Selleck confirmed the entire main cast voluntarily reduced their salaries by 25% for Season 14 to help lower the show’s budget. They were prepared to do the same for Season 15.
It’s a spinoff — same universe, new focus. Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan is the bridge between the two shows. Other original cast members have already guest-starred.
The producers and cast really want him to. Martin-Green says "the door’s open" and they’re waiting for the right story. Selleck has said he cares deeply about the writing, so it depends on if the material feels right to him.
All 14 seasons are available on Paramount+ (CBS’s streaming service). Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS and streams next day on Paramount+.
