Imagine you’re playing a game where two teams take turns trying to score points (called runs in baseball). The Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals played a very exciting game on Tuesday night. The Twins were losing 2-1 with only three outs left in the game (that’s like having one last chance to score). Then, a player named Royce Lewis hit the ball really far—so far that two teammates ran all the way around the bases to score. The Twins won 3-2!
IMPORTANT MOMENT
This was a "walk-off" hit—that means the game ended immediately because the home team (Twins) took the lead in their last turn at bat. Everyone on the Twins ran onto the field to celebrate!
| Player | Team | What They Did |
|---|---|---|
| Royce Lewis | Twins | Hit the game-winning triple as a pinch hitter (substitute) |
| Taj Bradley | Twins | Starting pitcher: 6 innings, 10 strikeouts, only 2 runs allowed |
| Jack Anderson | Twins | Relief pitcher: got his first major league win ever! |
| Byron Buxton | Twins | Left game with hip injury (concerning for the team) |
| Seth Lugo | Royals | Starting pitcher: 6 strong innings, only 1 run allowed |
| Josh Rojas | Royals | Stole home in a rare double-steal play |
| Alex Lange | Royals | Relief pitcher: gave up the winning hit (3rd blown save this year) |

| Wednesday Night | Joe Ryan (Twins) vs Randy Dobnak (Royals) | Dobnak used to play for the Twins! He’s pitching against his old team. |
The Minnesota Twins pulled off an amazing last-minute win against the Kansas City Royals. After trailing 2-1 going into the final inning, Royce Lewis came off the bench and hit a two-run triple to win the game 3-2. Starting pitcher Taj Bradley was fantastic with 10 strikeouts, but the scary moment was Byron Buxton leaving with a hip injury. The Royals actually played great defense (5 double plays!) and Seth Lugo pitched well, but their closer Alex Lange couldn’t hold the lead. The Twins have now won 3 in a row and are right in the playoff hunt!
Q: What’s a "walk-off" hit?
A: It’s when the home team gets the winning hit in their last at-bat. The game "walks off" the field immediately—no need for the other team to bat again.
Q: What does "pinch hitter" mean?
A: A substitute batter. Royce Lewis wasn’t in the starting lineup—he came in to hit for another player in the 7th inning.
Q: Why is stealing home so rare?
A: It’s incredibly risky! The runner on third base tries to sprint home while the pitcher is throwing to the batter. If the catcher catches the ball and tags them, they’re out. Josh Rojas pulled it off perfectly!
Q: What’s a "double play"?
A: Getting two outs in one continuous play. Usually: ground ball → fielder steps on second base (1st out) → throws to first base (2nd out). The Royals did this FIVE times!
Q: Why does Byron Buxton’s hip injury matter so much?
A: He’s one of the best players in baseball when healthy. But he gets injured often. This is the same hip that kept him out of the All-Star Game, so the Twins are very worried.
