Imagine this: It’s the bottom of the ninth inning. Your team is down by one run. There are two outs. The bases are loaded with tension. Then—crack! The ball flies off the bat, hits the top of the fence, and rolls away. Two runs score. Game over. Your team wins!
That’s exactly what happened Tuesday night in Minneapolis. Royce Lewis, playing for the Minnesota Twins, came off the bench as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-run triple with two outs in the ninth to stun the Kansas City Royals and give the Twins a 3-2 victory.
Important Point: A "walk-off" hit means the game ends immediately because the home team takes the lead in the bottom of the last inning. No more chances for the other team!
Early Lead for Minnesota
In the 4th inning, Kody Clemens hit a double and scored on Josh Bell’s single. Twins led 1-0.
Royals Strike Back in the 6th
Kansas City took a 2-1 lead with two clever runs:
| Team | Starting Pitcher | Record | ERA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minnesota Twins | Joe Ryan (All-Star) | 6-6 | 3.38 |
| Kansas City Royals | Randy Dobnak (former Twin!) | 0-0 | 1.42 |
Wednesday night – Rematch at Target Field. Dobnak faces his old team!
1. What is a "pinch hitter"?
A player who substitutes for another batter, usually in a key situation. Lewis came in to hit in the 7th inning and ended up winning the game.
2. What’s a "cutter"?
A type of fastball that moves slightly sideways at the last second—hard to hit squarely. Lewis hit this one perfectly.
3. Why is stealing home so rare and exciting?
It’s extremely risky! The runner sprints from 3rd to home while the pitcher throws. If the catcher catches the ball cleanly, the runner is usually out. Rojas pulled it off perfectly.
4. What does "optioned to the minors" mean?
A player on the 40-man roster gets sent down to the minor leagues (Triple-A St. Paul) to make room on the active roster. They can be recalled later—like Anderson was.
5. How rare are 5 double plays in one game?
Very! It’s the most by any team in a single game all season. Shows great defense and smart pitching by Lugo.
